Sophisticated and sensual - Aug 26, 2016
Dear Gardening Friends,
This weeks rain means there has never been a better time to get out in the garden. When you turn the soil over you will discover that the soil is moist and this almost guarantees that your plants will grow if you plant them now. Just remember that you never fertilise plants at planting time. Fertilisers are salts, so if you put them around newly planted seedlings and shrubs it draws the water away from the roots and can cause your plants too die
It's best to improve your soil with a bag of IGC Planting Compost. This contains a wetting agent and seaweed, so it nurtures your plants in the early stages and helps the roots grow. Once the roots grow the plants can take up water themselves so the plants are less reliant on you.
Having said all this isn't nature amazing! I discovered this Viola growing out of the asphalt in our car park. This plant has found a crack which held enough moisture for a seed to germinate and grow. This asphalt contains more nutrients than some of the Premium Potting Mixes that we have trialled recently.
It's tomato time now and usually after rain we don't get frost so it should be safe to plant now. Lisa is cranking up the ordering so we are getting more varieties every week.
You still can't beat our Tim's Fruit Fly Resistant tomato. If you buy 2x bags of Tim's Best Potting mix and a Tim's Fruit Fly Resistant Tomato this weekend we will give you a bottle of Harvest Fertiliser worth $12.99 for free. This is a great offer!
Harvest is an organic liquid fertiliser that you can use on all your plants. Ryan sprayed it over the leaves of our potted roses last year and it made the plants more disease resistant. You can water it over your strawberries and vegetables too. If you have potted plants, then this will give your plants an organic boost for spring!
Azaleas have started to flower and we have some beautiful plants for just $15.99. My favourite variety of all time is "Red Wings". This compact growing variety flowers in spring and autumn. It has bright red flowers that cover the shrub. This hardy Azalea can grow in full sun or shade and it's perfect for pots too. Team it up with a white flowering variety called "White Bouquet".
Rose lovers are in for a treat this week with a new variety called "Dark Desire" arriving. This Kordes variety has that amazing disease resistant. It has almost black buds that open red and change to violet purple with age. It has a sophisticated, sensual fragrance that's floral and fruity!!!!
OK, so it has a nice pong!
If you know someone who is getting married,we have a new rose bush called "Wedding Bells". This is another Kordes release that has lush green disease resistant foliage and spectacular pink perfumed flowers on long stems. It has 40 plus petal count for those who need to know. It only grows one metre high so this rose can fit in tiny gardens or in big pots! It's sure to be a winner. These new releases cost $27.99 less your garden club discount.
Poor pig nearly froze this week, and he had that dreamy look in his eyes which can only mean he is hoping to get Kings Charcoal Chicken, "chips and gravy" for lunch. When the wind is blowing in the right direction he can often smell "the pensioners roast" wafting down Queen Street. If you haven't tried it, put it on your bucket list.
Life is easy!
Happy Gardening
