Merry Christmas! - Dec 18, 2015

Dear Gardening Friends,

This is our last newsletter for the year. I hope you’ve enjoyed our weekly chat. Some of you will have become better gardeners because of this newsletter.
That’s our aim and we do try and make you smile every week. I am just limping over the finish line this year with a sore back from lifting Christmas trees!!!!

We will be very busy in the next few days repotting and gift wrapping indoor plants for Christmas presents. It seems everybody leaves buying plants to the last minute. They are terrified that the plants will die before they get to give them away! In reality plants are much tougher than you think and they will still be looking fine come Christmas day.

We do have some lovely plants this week that will make your friends smile. “Happy plants” are one of my favourite indoor plants and they have such a great name. My parents have had one inside the house for at least 30 years. It is said that if this plant ever comes into flower then you will win lotto or have good fortune. My parents are still waiting for it to flower but they have had good fortune.

Fiddle leaf Figs are very in fashion in the city apartments with their enormous shiny green leaves. These are a real statement plant and they can grow up to 2 metres high in 10 years or so. Put one of these in a bright light area inside your house and it will remove the toxins from the air all year round for free! Yes the air inside your house is actually more polluted than the air outside. So when people say they are going outside for some fresh air, it is actually true!
Fiddle Leaf figs are not cheap but they will improve your families health so they are a great investment. This is the sort of gift you buy yourself and charge out to your husband. Sorry guys!

Anthuriums or Flamingo Flowers are also one of my favourite indoor plants. These have amazing shiny dark green heart shaped leaves with even more amazing flowers. Traditionally they come in red but this year we have the pink flowering varieties too. These seem to be pig’s favourite too. These are super hardy indoor plants and they will flower throughout the warmer months if they get enough light. Remember if you close up all your curtains during the day then your indoor plants will not grow.

We have Anthuriums covered in flowers for just $24.99. These look amazing when they are gift wrapped and we offer this service for free.
Remember if you decide to buy a ceramic pot we will repot your plant into it for free. We do have restrictions on pot size. I had a lady buy a wine barrel off us once and she wanted free potting. Obviously that’s ridiculous because it takes 3 bags of potting mix and it’s too heavy for our staff to lift.

Lucky Bamboo is another one of those feel good indoor plants that the Chinese believe can bring you wealth and happiness. This is one of the easiest indoor plants for people to look after and they are the perfect starter plant for kids too. All you need to do is water them weekly. They already come potted in a beautiful ceramic pot ready to go! These are perfect for people in units with smaller spaces and they are perfect for the office desk! Bound to bring you good Feng Shui even in an office.

We have been selling African Violets for at least 30 years and I can’t believe how cheap they are. We have these Mini African Violets in a nice white ceramic pot for just $9.99. If your grandma is still alive then she will love one of these for Christmas. She can sit it on the window sill facing the morning sun and it will flower non-stop for months. We have the African violet fertiliser too if you want them to continue to flower.

We have the larger growing and flowering varieties and these are amazing value compared to cut flowers from the florist. They are just $15.99 and they are covered in buds and flowers. Once you own an African Violet they are so easy to grow from a leaf. Simply put a leaf in a brown bottle with some water and it will sprout roots within weeks!

Crepe Myrtles have burst into bloom around Macarthur. These drought hardy trees are really suited to Macarthur’s hot dry climate and they are the perfect size for today’s courtyard sized gardens. We have a beauty growing on our front lawn called “ Tuscarora”. Karyn planted this about 5 years ago and it is looking sensational. Its covered in these bright pink flowers for at least 100 days and if it rains during Summer they often produce new growth and get even more flowers! We have all your favourite colours here at the nursery.

Frangipanis have burst into bloom just in time for Christmas. We have over 40 varieties with prices starting at just $15.99. We bought these directly from Darwin, the Frangipani capital of Australia. Many of these colours have never been seen in Campbelltown. If you’re looking for a great gift to give under $20 then this is perfect. They grow well in pots or gardens in hot sunny spots. You will love the sweet perfumed flowers.

Pig has been avoiding the ham industry this week by dressing up as Rudolph. Not many people know that pig and Rudolph are very good friends and they actually meet every Wednesday night at AA!

Only a few days till Christmas now. Try and be kind to people, even if you are ready for a breakdown.
Come and see us if you just need to spend some time with the flowers.

We are closed on Christmas day and Boxing day to spend time with our families.

Merry Christmas & Happy Gardening,
Tim
