Not so fresh air! - Jul 03, 2015

Dear Gardening Friends,

It might be cold but that hasn't stopped Magnolias from starting to flower. These amazing small trees burst into bloom before the leaves appear. The flowers are often tulip shaped.
The most common variety is one called Magnolia soulangiana. It is the original pink flowering variety which is still our best seller by far.

This year Simon has found some of the more exotic larger flowering varieties that get much bigger flowers. Look for an almost red flowering variety called "Vulcan".
These small growing trees are the perfect size for today's courtyard sized gardens. They will grow about 3-5metres high by 3 metres wide. In winter the leaves drop off to allow the winter sun to shine through.
Plant them on a mound of Tims Planting Compost improved soil for best results and mulch around the base with sugarcane.

We have a new variety of Blueberry called "Vitality". Our gardening friends are amazed that Blueberry plants fruit in the first season. Usually you have to wait years before you get any fruit. This new evergreen variety seems to fruit earlier than other varieties on the market because it is covered in these pretty white flowers now. (Plants are only $15.99)
Blueberry Vitality, like other varieties grows better in pots. We have had great success growing them in Tims Best Potting Mix. You need a pot that holds at least 2 bags. Grow your Blueberry in the sunniest position you can find. If you move house take your plant with you.
Fruit will ripen leading up to Christmas. No bugs or insects attack these plants so you can go chemical free! Kids love eating Blueberries. A mature plant can produce around $300 worth of fruit every season.
We are so sick of gardeners complaining about passion fruit vines suckering and becoming weeds we are releasing a new variety in Spring called Tim's Big Black Passionfruit. This new seedling grown variety will never sucker and it produces huge black fruit that are full of sweet tasting pulp. You better starting looking for a Pavlova recipe.
Plants will be available in spring which is the best time to plant. Stay tuned for more info!

You often hear people they they are going outside for some fresh air! Well studies have found that the air outside is less polluted than the air inside your house. It seems all the plastic, paint, carpet, furniture and electrical products give off chemicals which can kill us!

NASA have done studies on indoor plants and found that they remove many of these toxins from the air. They are natures natural air conditioners. If you don't have indoor plants your children could be in danger. I have this beautiful Kentia Palm in my office to keep the air clean. I love looking at the beautiful foliage too. We have a great selection of the top 10 air cleaners. Come and talk to our Horts!

I wrote last week about Orange Trumpet Vines. There is a beauty growing at Trattoria Restaurant in Camden. A few club members contacted us about how many they would need to cover a fence. Only one would be my answer after seeing this monster growing up north. Of course the cooler weather in Macarthur will keep it under control with a bit of pruning by you.

If you were thinking about ringing Hayden last week about mowing your lawns and pruning your hedges here is his number again 0416 400 150. We need your help to get this young man started.

Happy Gardening
