RU OK? - Sep 11, 2014

Dear Gardening Friends,

I bumped into Costa Georgiadis at the Australian Garden Show. What a nice guy. I asked him if he would mind if I shared our photo on Facebook and he laughed and said “No worries”.

He was such a tiny man in real life and I must admit if I had my seceteurs on me I might have given his beard a spring prune.

Costa was very interested to hear that we had been doing trials on the cheaper potting mixes and he was horrified to learn that plants didn’t grow in them.

I would really like to do a potting mix trial on all potting mixes available in NSW and expose the brands that actually kill plants. Perhaps we could take a stand at next years Australian Garden Show. I contacted Choice Magazine a couple of years ago but they were not interested.

All our summer vegetables have now arrived and it is safe to plant some of the frost sensitive seedlings like Basil, Zucchini, Cucumbers and Capsicum.

We have over 30 varieties of tomatoes available now. We still have Tim’s Giant Tomato Seedlings. I grew this variety in my garden last year and then kept the seeds from the largest fruit. We gave these seeds to our seedling grower.

This heirloom variety can produce fruit up to 750grams. The fruit are delicious because they have less seeds than other varieties.

I picked my fruit just as they started to change colour then brought them inside to ripen on the window sill. This helped to keep them fruit fly free. If you would prefer to ripen the fruit on the vine then plant Tim’s Fruit Fly Resistant Tomato.

Ryan was spraying our rose bushes last week and I could tell by the smell that he was using something “very organic”.

Ryan secretly loves roses and if you are ever looking for Ryan then start looking in the rose section first. Anyway I noticed that the smell was a different smell than usual.

Ryan is known as Mr Seasol around here but I was amazed to find out that he was using “Harvest”.

Ryan admitted under interrogation that he has been using Harvest for a long time. Harvest contains seaweed but it also contains Fish, Fulvic Acid and Trace Elements.
Ryan mixes this product with water then sprays it over the foliage and stems. Our rose bushes have never looked healthier.

The leaves are huge and disease free and the plants are covered in buds already. I often hear Graham Ross talking about Harvest on The 2GB Garden Clinic.

You can use this organic liquid fertiliser on your vegetable garden too; we sell it in a couple of different sizes.

Our Rose bushes are about to go up in price so buy them this weekend if you want to save money. We still have 1000 to choose from. See Ryan if you need help.

Margaret Appleby has been at the nursery all day today talking to people about RU OK Day?

She even convinced Pig to help support this fantastic idea. RU OK Day is a gentle reminder that we need to keep in touch with family, friends, neighbours and colleagues.

She has helped several distressed people here today. Margaret did a lot of work for Lifeline during her working career but she has now retired to help look after her grandchildren and huge Rose garden.Beautiful weather has arrived so you must come and see us soon.

Happy Gardening
